September Setup Instructions

West Palm Dealers,

It is morning in Pamplona.

The sun is up. The streets are narrow. Papa Hemingway is seated above the route with a glass in his hand. Fitzgerald is beside him talking too much. Gertrude Stein is unimpressed. Picasso has somehow obtained another bottle.

Below them, the runners gather.

Except this is not Pamplona.

It is the South Florida Fairgrounds.

And you are the runners.

The bulls are everything coming through the doors behind you: tables, dollies, furniture, showcases, carts, racks, boxes, porters and several thousand pounds of antiques moving rapidly in directions that are not always predictable.

At 8:00 AM, the gates open.

And then they run.

There is no prize for being the first person through the building.

There is also no prize for getting run over by a Victorian sideboard.

Remain calm.

Drive slowly.

Look before backing up.

Watch for people pushing carts and dollies. Watch for porters. Watch for furniture.

Watch for the dealer who suddenly stops in the middle of the aisle because he has just realized his booth is 150 feet in the opposite direction.

The bulls of Pamplona generally know where they are going. We cannot make the same guarantee about a dealer pushing a six-foot showcase on a furniture dolly.

Call Dispatch. Do not wander the grounds searching for someone. Do not begin an expedition to find Jon.

And, above all: Do not disturb Jon.

Jon has been invited to sit upstairs with Papa.

Hemingway has poured him a drink. Fitzgerald is telling a story that appears to have no ending. Picasso wants to discuss booth lighting. Gertrude Stein keeps repeating that a booth is a booth is a booth.

Jon cannot possibly be expected to leave.

The show is big. The East Expo is packed. Buildings 6-10 are open. A tremendous amount of merchandise is coming through those doors.

There will be confusion. There will be carts. There will be furniture. There will probably be one dealer standing directly in the path of traffic while having a lengthy conversation.

Do not become part of the carnage.

Stay calm. Pay attention. Help each other. Give the porters room to work. And remember that everyone will get into the building and everyone will get set up.

At five o’clock, when the last cart has rolled down the aisle and the final armoire has narrowly missed someone’s ankle, Papa will raise his glass.

It was a good setup, he will say.

Nobody died.
