30 Sep From Marc Antony

Friends, dealers, customers, lend me your ears.

We come not to bury the West Palm Beach Antiques Festival, but to praise it.

Though Brutus may arrive with dagger drawn and Cassius whisper that the market is weak, the Show will not suffer the knife of Brutus.

This weekend, more than 300 dealers gather at the South Florida Fairgrounds.

Spaces 1–205 — East Expo: enter through Gate 2.
Spaces 299–399 — Buildings 6–10: report directly to Buildings 6–10.

Know thy number. Know thy gate. Move thy chariots.

Bring the extra table. Bring the fourth showcase. Bring the strange thing you have owned for seven years and still cannot explain. Its buyer may already be marching toward Palm Beach.

Once inside, straighten thy paintings, polish thy silver, light thy showcases and price thy merchandise.

Soon the gates will open.

Designers will descend. Collectors will advance. Citizens who swear they are “just looking” will somehow leave with a side table, three paintings and something that will not fit in their SUV.

There will be negotiations.

A dealer will proclaim, “That is my absolute bottom.”

Then take twenty dollars less.

Such is commerce. Such is Rome. Such is the antique business.

Friends, dealers, customers—

We are here to praise the Show, not bury it.

It has survived recessions, bad weather, broken dollies, missing price tags and customers asking whether an 18th-century chest is “mid-century.”

It will survive Brutus.

Raise your booths. Fill your showcases. Prepare for battle.

May your wagons be lighter and your pockets heavier by Sunday afternoon.

Hail Caesar.
Hail Commerce.
Hail the Show.
